Cash cleaned up and made ready to go to the dance. He shaved and put on a crisp white shirt, polished his boots and wore his best black broadcloth coat. He looked at himself in the mirror critically and then smiled. Yep, he still cut a good figure at thirty-one. He had no doubt he could sway a few ladies into insisting a husband vote Cash’s way.

He paused in the doorway, wondering where that ornery girl was tonight. Probably on her way back to Dallas, thinking her job was done.

He was wrong. When he walked into the ballroom, he’d barely gotten himself a drink and looked around, when an official motioned for the orchestra to stop playing. The curious crowd turned toward the doorway. The official announced in a loud voice, “Ladies and gentlemen, the governor of the greatest state in the union, Texas. Please welcome him tonight.”

The crowd nodded, smiled and began to applaud as the governor swept into the room with his homely wife on his arm. Right behind him came other people Cash recognized as important from this morning. A petite beauty floated in on the arm of a well-known senator. The brown-haired girl wore an expensive blue silk gown that must have cost a fortune. She was such a beauty that all he could do was stare at the creamy expanse of breast above the blue silk and the cascade of brown curls down her back. Her delicate neck shone with a fine necklace of blue sapphires. Somehow, she looked familiar.

Cash blinked. No, it couldn’t be and yet the girl turned, saw him and smiled and he knew then that the staid librarian had indeed turned into a swan and come to the governor’s ball. Where had she gotten such expensive things? Oh, of course one of the rich members of the Lone Star Ladies had taken pity on the poor little frumpy thing and loaned her some clothes and jewelry.

Even as he watched, mouth open in amazement, the governor approached her, then escorted her around the room, introducing her to important people. Men were lining up for an introduction. Cash didn’t like the way some of them were leering at the little widow as they kissed her hand.

Cash decided at that moment he would have to fight fire with fire. There was only one way to deal with this crafty girl—the way Cash had always dealt with difficult women. He would seduce Bonnie Purdy into falling in love with him and abandoning her crusade. Yes, he nodded as he strode across the floor toward her, he would seduce her and the sooner the better!
